"No, I'm too busy trying to deflect your Power of Stupidity. But I don't think I'm strong enough."
HISTORY
Lena moved to Gatlin, South Carolina at the beginning of her sophomore year of high school. The popular girls on the cheerleading squad immediately set about bullying her, but she found an unexpected ally in popular kid, Ethan Wate, a boy she had seen in her dreams. The two grew close, despite the bullying they receive.

After Ethan witnessed strange things that Lena and her uncle could do, she admitted to him that she was a Caster, a magic user who can use Light or Dark magic. On her sixteenth birthday her fate would be decided, and she would either be good or evil. Together they tried to research Caster lore, to discover a way to make sure she would be Claimed by the Light. For months leading up to her birthday, her mother tried to attack her with magic, and for some reason Ethan, a Mortal, was able to protect her. On her birthday, her mother appeared, explaining that Lena had a choice in her Claiming. She stabbed Ethan to try and force Lena to choose the Dark like her, but Lena stopped time and used a Cast to bring Ethan back to life, unknowingly killing her uncle in the process. She sent away her Claiming moon and didn't choose a side.

Distraught at this, Lena pulled away from Ethan and began to hang out with Dark Casters. Worried for her, Ethan journeyed through dangerous Caster territory to find her, to discover her mother had captured her, trying to force her to choose the Dark. Ethan encouraged her to choose for herself, but as Lena just wanted to be herself, she Claimed both. She discovered that her uncle had been kept alive by magic, and was brought back into a corporeal form.

After Lena's Claiming, odd things started happening around the globe. In not choosing a side, Lena had disturbed the Order of Things, breaking it and starting off the end of the world. There was a heat wave that stretched through the fall, lakes and rivers dried up, plagues of insects arrived, and the Casters powers weren't working correctly. Lena felt extremely guilty over this, but didn't know what could be done. Ethan began acting oddly after Lena Claimed herself, but he didn't know what was wrong with him, only revealing certain details to Lena.

Curious about her mother, Lena went to her old house that Sarafine had burnt to the ground. There she found a box with some of Sarafine's things, and when she and Ethan touched them, they had visions of Sarafine's life after she went Dark and how she tried to fight it. She was corrupted by her Incubus ancestor, Abraham Ravenwood, who had a plan to use her to achieve his ends and got her on his side.

Abraham visited Ethan, demanding to know where John was, and destroyed parts of town when Ethan couldn't tell him. They later discovered Ridley had been hiding John in her room, holding him prisoner since he couldn't break through the wards surrounding Ravenwood. Liv, who lived in the Caster Tunnels and was assisting Macon, much to Lena's chagrin, began questioning John about Abraham's purpose for him, and the two grew close. As this happened, Lena's jealously of Liv faded, and she was pleased later when Liv and John became a couple.

When Ethan talked to the Demon Queen about the Order of Things, she said it would be restored by the One Who is Two, who must sacrifice themselves to bring about a new Order. When Ethan was afraid she meant Lena, because she's both Dark and Light, the Demon Queen said it wasn't her, and later when he discussed it with Lena, they tred to find out who it was. He soon discovered that his soul was fractured as a result of his dying and coming back to life so quickly, and that one half was in the Otherworld, which was why strange things were happening to him. Lena didn't want to accept that he was the One Who is Two, but all signs pointed to it and he told Lena goodbye before throwing himself off a water tower to sacrifice himself.

After his death, Amma and the Casters decided to secretly bury his body and tell everyone he was called out of town to help his aunt. The new Order began, but Lena was determined to find a way to bring Ethan back to life. When she visited his grave, she saw the keepsake she'd left had been moved, and was sure Ethan had been there. Ethan was in the Otherworld, but hadn't moved on because he had unfinished business. He discovered he had never been meant to die when he did, and that his page in The Caster Chronicles had been altered. If he wanted to come back to life, he needed to rip out his page, but he needed things that were in the living world to help him there. So he communicated to Lena via crossword puzzles in the paper, asking for the Book of Moons. Since the book had last been seen with Abraham Ravenwood, Lena devised a plan to get it back by offering him John. John went along with it, but Lena still felt awful that she was sacrificing him, knowing Abraham had some evil purpose for him. When they met, Abraham tried to double cross them, but Macon arrived and killed him, leaving them free to take the book. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the book to the Otherworld, and so they enlisted help from Amma and the Greats to pass it over.

Once Ethan had it, he had to go through many trials in the Otherworld, but eventually he ripped out his page and was restored to life. Lena sensed him right away and ran to join him, and they discovered that her touch no longer hurt him. By the end of the series, there's a new Order, Lena is both Dark and Light, and she has Ethan back.
APPEARANCE
Lena is a teenage girl with long black hair that curls and uncurls when she uses her magic. Her eyes switch colors often. Originally they were a vibrant green, then one went gold. A few days later, both went hazel, then both started turning gold. Finally, they changed back to one green eye, one gold eye.

She has a long, pale face, with a crescent moon-shaped birthmark under her left eye on her cheekbone. She's said to have a slim waist, and is either average height or shorter. At the start of the first novel, she's fifteen years old, and turns sixteen at the end. In the next book, her Claiming moon is brought back out of time, which makes her seventeen according to Caster conventions of time.

She tends to wear a lot of black and silver, and always has on her charm necklace -- a chain with mementos that mean a lot to her. They're simple things like a pop can top, a piece of red string, and a few things her boyfriend gave her: a homemade Christmas decoration, his mother's ring, and a Sharpie on a keychain. She's also rarely without her black Converse, with Sharpie scribblings across the heels. Like the Converse, Lena likes to draw on her hands, and on her palm there are faded swirling black patterns that look like Sharpie, but aren't.
PERSONALITY
Lena undoubtedly carries a great weight on her shoulders. From birth she's known that she is a Caster, and that her world is very different from the Mortal world. She's known that on her sixteenth birthday, she'll be Claimed by the Dark or Light, and in her family they have no choice in the matter. Being Dark is equated with being bad and dangerous, and it's her great fear that she'll go Dark like her cousin Ridley did.

Living among Mortals, Lena just wants to be accepted by them and be normal, but her upbringing makes her strange to them, and she's never fit in anywhere. She tries to be brave, refusing to let Mortals break her spirit, but she cracks sometimes, unable to control her emotions. For all her powers, she's still a teenage girl who just wants to fit in, but it seems impossible.

She worries about letting Mortals get too close to her, and many times she tries to push Ethan away, as their worlds shouldn't overlap. But unlike other Mortals, he likes her for who she is and doesn't want her to be anyone else, and she falls in love with him, despite the fact they can't touch for long. Though Ethan is a Mortal, they are undeniably connected, and it's suggested that Ethan is a Wayward: a Mortal guide for a Caster who's lost their way. But he's still a Mortal, and being a part of her world is dangerous for him. She'll draw away to protect him, only to have him run after her, unwilling to accept that, and she comes back to him again and again.

She knows her actions have major consequences, and that her family and Ethan sacrifice so much to keep her safe. That's a lot to put on a person, and it sometimes makes her want to isolate herself even more, as she feels she's a danger to everyone. It also gives her a major guilt complex, knowing she holds others' lives in her hands, and she feels like running away from her problems, again, trying to grasp onto some kind of normalcy even though she is far from a normal girl.
